One caveat I would add about self-publishing is how it can help you add credibility in your writing niche or industry. I self-published a small book on writing that has helped me greatly in catching clients for regular writing gigs. I, too, am a full-time freelance writer, and many of my clients say they chose me over other applicants because I knew enough about good writing to feel confident enough to publish my own book about it. Some even purchased the book (it’s cheap), liked what they saw and how it helped them in simple ways, and contacted me for a writing proposal. I have not sold lots of books, but it has contributed to landing several regular writing gigs that pay well.
