How to Prepare Now for Sparse Holiday Work

I’ve written this before and I repeat it here without apology for emphasis: freelance writing is an effort-based economy. That idea was made plain to me by another Medium writer but it has since been driven home by my own experience. There is no guaranteed salary. To earn money, a writer must produce usable copy for clients. Period.

Like many other businesses, freelance web writing has up times and down times. My primary income is writing copy for blogs, websites, and other Internet-related pieces, and there are times of the year when the demand slows way down. The worst time is fast approaching. It is the holiday slump. Others call it the Holiday Shutdown.

And that’s literally what happens. After a frenzied rush beginning in October to get ahead and have everything for the next few months written, edited, and readied for publication, everyone takes off from December 15 to January 5.
